Fab lights from Ikea (Ikea)
Don’t you just love these new lights from IKEA?
This sixth collection from IKEA PS was launched in the UK on April 1st. The PS stands for Post Scriptum and its vision is to supply cutting edge design at prices we can all afford. How relevant is that for today’s market? As if that combination alone wasn’t enough to interest us, they also ‘walk their talk’ by minimising the use of scarce resources and taking responsibility for people and the environment wherever they impact.
It is the aspect of minimising use of resources and taking responsibility that comes to the fore in this new collection for 2009. They have called it Never Ending Stories because it is all about stories, returning to ones roots and empowering people.
The designs come from traditional Swedish culture and come from nature. It is about authentic materials as well as style, in effect - ‘a heritage where sustainability has become a central part of human values’.
Their new Svarva lamps are inspired by the idea of the wood turner, one of the oldest decorative techniques. Front Design say “by dividing a turned piece of wood into smaller sections we were able to create curves normally not possible to make. This way we could create a new expression – a bendable piece of wood. We wanted to create a lamp with a strong character, like a good friend watching over your shoulder while you read”.

I was fascinated to read about Front Design. They are a group of four women who met while studying industrial design at Stockholm University College of Arts Crafts and Design. They question the role of designer as creator and believe designs spring from random thoughts often generated through brain storming. However bizarre their ideas they still go through a rigorous research process to check out the production process. To adhere to IKEA’s philosophy they also have to tread lightly on the environment, offer a practical solution and do it at a keen price.

I love the quirkiness of these lamps that seem so modern and yet rooted in traditional Swedish craft. I think they would look great in the bedroom for night-time reading and for atmospheric lighting rather than the more formal central ceiling light.
